Blog Location - Subfolder, Subdomain or Separate Domain?

Post by Accrete »

In this thread we are discussing hosting your blog on a web property you own not hosting it on a third party site (like Blogger or Wordpress.com for example).

When deciding where to create your blog you need to consider which one of the following locations is best for your goals:
  1. In a subfolder
The url of your blog would look like this if you choose to create it in a folder:
    domain-name.com/blog-folder-name/
  2. In a subdomain
If located in a subdomain your blog url would look like this:
    blog-name.domain-name.com
  3. On a separate domain name
A blog on a separate domain would have a url of a regular domain name.
    blog-domain-name.com
As mentioned above, the best location is the one that best suits your goals.

Here are some other people's experiences:

What is your personal experience when deciding whether to host a blog in a subfolder, subdomain or separate domain name?

My personal experience is:

When teaching I created,
  1. a website specifically about HTML coding (the main topic of my teaching)
  2. a blog with basic computer/technical issues/skills the small business owners I was teaching did not know how to do. Added the same type of posts for actual clients also.
  3. a blog with mistakes made when creating a site or doing SEO.
  4. a website specifically for web development clients
Why did I do this? Because even though they are all related to owing a website they are all have a different theme/niche within the broad topic of website ownership. Each of these web properties do well in their own right.
